Run the Line
hey,
what kind of doctor did you see about your leg problems? I have had bad shin splits for a while, and I want to get them checked out because it's been getting worse. Thanks!

I would definitely recommend getting your legs checked out if you are having difficulties with shin splints.  While resting, icing, and cutting back on the mileage of runs can help, sometimes we all need to go to rehab :)

I had been recommended to a specific clinic by my sister.  I am not a big believer in Western medicine when it comes to sports injuries, because I think that traditional doctors can put too much emphasis on medication and less on the underlying issue.  So the doctor is a doctor, but not in the traditional sense.  Here are his degrees:

  • certified chiropractic sports physician
  • certified strength and conditioning specialist
  • emergency medical technician
  • diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians

So while he has a chiropractic background, his focus is on sports medicine.  He asked me tons of questions about my injuries, watched me walk back and forth, tested my flexibility, looked at my running shoes, and had me do some balancing exercises, all to diagnose my injuries.  Then once he figured out what was wrong, he employed various stretching, soft tissue massage (around my knee and shin muscles), and joint manipulation.  While this all sounds well and good, these techniques made me hurt so bad (but also so good).

If you live in Minnesota, I can certainly direct you to the clinic’s website.  Otherwise, I would suggest calling local running stores to see if they have any sports medicine physicians that they would suggest.  I hear it also helps to go to a doctor who is a runner, because they understand the injuries a lot more.

Hope this helps!  Let me know if you have any other questions!
